Elementary School Named about Virginia Union Alum

The Prince William County School Board has named its newest elementary school in honor of Fannie W. Fitzgerald, a 1953 graduate of Virginia Union University. Ms. Fitzgerald was a pioneer in the desegregation of Prince William County Public Schools and a lifelong community leader in Prince William County, Virginia.

Ms. Fitzgerald served as the first African American woman to be appointed elementary supervisor for the newly integrated schools of Prince William County from 1968 through 1971. She left that post to become a learning disability teacher at Dale City Elementary. In 1988, Ms. Fitzgerald retired, but she continued to volunteer in county elementary schools until 1995.
