Radio One’s Cathy Hughes will address Bowie State’s spring graduates - May 21

(Bowie, Maryland) - Radio One’s Cathy Huges will address more than 600 graduates during Bowie State University’s spring commencement on May 21 at 10 a.m. at the Bulldog stadium.
This year Bowie State will commemorate its 145th anniversary as Maryland’s oldest HBCU and one of the oldest in the nation. The BSU community will celebrate more than 600 graduates during this year’s spring commencement. Graduates will receive degrees in more than 40 academic programs administered by the University’s College of Education, Business, Professional Studies, and Arts and Sciences. Catherine Liggins Hughes will give the commencement address and is receiving an honorary degree from Bowie State University.
Catherine “Cathy” Liggins Hughes has been Chairperson of the board of directors and Secretary of Radio One since 1980, and was Chief Executive Officer of Radio One from 1980 to 1997. She was one of the founders of Radio One’s predecessor company in 1980. Since 1980 she has worked in various capacities for Radio One, one of the largest African American-owned and operated broadcast companies in the United States. There are now 53 radio stations in 16 markets and a cable network, TV One.
In May 1999, Cathy Hughes and her son Alfred Liggins, President and CEO, took their company public. Hughes made history again by becoming the first African American woman with a company on the stock exchange. Radio One’s value is currently in excess of two billion dollars. In 2000, Black Enterprise magazine named Radio One, “Company of the Year,” Fortune magazine rated it one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” and Radio One was inducted into the Maryland Business Hall of Fame.
Bowie State to host Women’s Healthy Living mini-conference - March 27

(Bowie, MD) - Bowie State University will host the Women’s Healthy Living Mini-Conference on Saturday, March 27, to discuss women’s health issues including breast cancer, obesity and the heart, cervical cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), and sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Center for Learning and Technology in Room 102 on campus.
Sessions also will include a cooking demonstration, yoga, exercise, line dancing, writing as a stress reliever and spoken word/poetry.
Speakers include Dr. Regina Hampton, breast surgeon, Doctor’s Hospital; Dr. Barbara Hutchinson, Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Anne Arundel Medical Center; Dr. Michelle Silva, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Washington Hospital Center; Dr. Celia Maxwell, Infectious Diseases, Howard University School of Medicine; Ty Grey El, poet and author; and Dr. Rita Wutoh, Director of the Wellness Center, Bowie State University.
Bowie State presents dance and musical peformance Anansi the Spider is Lost - March 5-6

(Bowie, MD) - The Bowie State University Theater Department will present Anansi the Spider is Lost, a mischievous African tale told through music and dance on March 5-6. The presentation is a collection of fun-filled dance stories for the whole family, “loosely goosely” based on popular nursery rhymes.
The general public is invited to attend at a cost of $3.00 (children through high school) and $5.00 (general admission). The event is being held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Communication Arts Center, Samuel L. Myers Auditorium, 14000 Jericho Park Road, Bowie, Md. 20715.
Bowie State to present play on life of late Justice Thurgood Mashall - Feb. 25

(Bowie, Md.)-Bowie State University’s (BSU) Performing Arts Center partners with The Elder Theodore L. Barber Scholarship Foundation, Inc. to present a play on the life of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 7 p.m. The event takes place at the University’s Samuel Meyers Auditorium of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Communications Art Center. Leading up to the play, at 6:30 p.m., the Oxon Hill High School Choir will present a mini-concert. The event proceeds will be donated to the scholarship foundation for Bowie State University students.
“The Department of Fine and Performing Arts is honored to have been selected by The Elder Theodore L. Barber Scholarship Foundation, Inc. to celebrate Black History Month at Bowie State University with this particular play that highlights the life of Thurgood Marshall, an extraordinary figure who served as the first African American on the Supreme Court and who had a major impact on civil rights for African Americans,” said Dr. Gail Medford, professor and coordinator of the BSU Theatre Program.

Bowie State gets new Admissions director

(Bowie, Md.) - Lonnie R. Morris Jr. brings new energy and leadership to Bowie State University as director of admissions. He will provide strategic leadership to both the undergraduate and graduate admissions operations. A leader in the areas of college admissions, enrollment management, and institutional effectiveness, Morris is a trendsetter in urban higher education.
He joins Bowie State during an upswing in student enrollment which rose to 5,483 in fall 2008 while new transfer enrollment increased more than 10 percent from fall 2007 to fall 2008 and new graduate enrollment, over 25 percent. University officials project an increase in transfer, graduate and continuing education students entering the institution this fall.
Morris plans to use his leadership experience to advance the admissions process. He previously served as vice president of enrollment management at Holy Names University in Oakland California, director of admissions at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee and director of admissions for Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida. He has experience working with programs of widely-recognized agencies such as the National Organization of Concerned Black Men, the College Bound Foundation, TRIO programs, the Black College Network and Sylvan Learning Systems.
“I plan to combine my passions for outreach and volunteerism with my leadership initiatives to take the admissions process at Bowie State to a new level,” said Morris, who holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Morgan State University and a master’s degree in organization development from Johns Hopkins University.
The assistant vice president for enrollment management, Don Kiah, oversees the division which encompasses the admissions office. He commented, “We are excited about our admissions team, having worked to assemble a group of people with innovative ideas and both traditional and nontraditional experience in admissions. Our new admissions director has the right mix of leadership experience and abilities to help us achieve the goals we have set.”
Maryland Center at Bowie State awarded million-dollar grant

BOWIE, Md.– The Maryland Center at Bowie State University has been awarded a $1.1 million grant from the Maryland State Department of Education to increase advanced math skills of Prince George’s County students in grades 5-9. The grant is part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center program funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
The project was spearheaded by State Delegate Gerron Levi (23 A) in an effort to afford students in the Lanham and Capitol Heights community an opportunity to participate in a real-world math summer camp and school-year booster sessions. Over the next three years more than 400 Prince George’s County students will have the opportunity to participate.
“This program is a collaboration of community stakeholders who took it upon themselves to develop a program to improve math and science skills for youth living in distressed communities and finding the resources to implement it,” said Terry Lawlah, executive director of The Maryland Center.
