Cheyney University Art Professor Earns Prestigious Recognition

Joel Keener, a faculty member at Cheyney University, is this year’s “Art Guest of Honor” at the 16th annual SHEVACON Convention, held in Roanoke VA, on February 22-24th.
SheVaCon stands for Shenandoah Valley Convention, so named because it began in Staunton Virginia — located in the Shenandoah Valley. SheVaCon is a Science Fiction and Fantasy, Horror, Costuming and Gaming Convention. Keener has participated in this event for the past nine years.
This year’s convention will showcase Keener’s many talents, as a published author and artist, photographer, sculptor, and graphic designer. He uses pencil to express his visions and ideas of the world around him. Those “visions” have earned him numerous awards including an international judges choice award and a Chesley nomination.
He earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS degree in Studio Art from Skidmore College.

Bethune Cookman Band Director Recognized

Donovan Wells calls himself a country boy who grew up fishing and tending patches of vegetables on the family farm in Virginia, even earning money for school by packing hams in Smithfield.But the director of bands — including the Marching Wildcats — at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach has reached out far beyond the banks of Virginia’s James River, and not only with his music.
This month, he’s among the ambassadors of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) featured in a free booklet titled “Profiles in Pride: March of the Mighty,” available at all Wal-Mart stores. Kraft, the other project sponsor, ensured the booklet’s food element, and Wells contributed the Crispy Fried Fish recipe he and his father have always used.
Bethune Cookman College Becomes Bethune Cookman University

(Daytona Beach, Fla.) – In the spirit of love and appreciation for the hard work of her trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, President Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed took the opportunity of Valentine’s Day to make a campus-wide announcement that the college has officially been renamed BETHUNE-COOKMAN UNIVERSITY.
“This has been a part of the vision for the college since August of 2004,” said Dr. Reed. A grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded the initial planning that resulted in a master’s degree program being launched in August 2007. That step led to the school’s eligibility for university status.
“Our graduate school and the graduate program in Transformative Leadership have enabled us to become the great Bethune-Cookman University,” said Reed. “I am certain that our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, would be very pleased that we have taken her vision into the 21st century.”

Congressman Elijah Cummings to attend Tom Joyner Kick-Off Fundraiser on Coppin State Campus

BALTIMORE, MD — (February 19, 2008) – U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and several top city officials will participate in a festive round of activities as Coppin State University and the Tom Joyner Foundation launch a major fund-raising campaign on campus Feb. 21, 2008, at 9 a.m.
The kick-off program, which will be held in The Coppin Center, officially launches a $300,000, campaign that focuses on the Tom Joyner Foundation’s selection of Coppin as its “School of the Month (TJFSOTM) For July 2008.”
City officials scheduled to speak during kick-off festivities include Deputy Mayor Salima Siler Marriott and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Special guests will include Baltimore City State’s Attorney Patricia Jessamy and Seventh District Baltimore City Councilwoman Belinda Conaway.

Council for the International Exchange of Scholars awards Tougaloo Professor

Professor MaryDavis, associate professor of French and coordinator for Modern Languages, just received notification that her proposal for a Fulbright Scholar-in- Residence from Korea has been awarded by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars. The award will enable the department to integrate the study of Korean with the College’s new alliance with Wonk Wang University in South Korea. In addition to teaching courses, scholars may give campus-wide and community lectures, help initiate international programs and contribute to curriculum development.

Prairie View’s Frazier named Coach of the Year

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — The Black College Sports Page has announced the selection of Prairie View A&M’s Henry Frazier III as its 2007 Coach of the Year. Frazier was announced as the recipient of the College Sporting News Coach of the Year award in Raleigh, N.C.
This past season Frazier and his coaching staff completed arguably one of the toughest tasks in all of college football, turning around Prairie View A&M’s football program.
At the conclusion of the season the Panther’s football program has seen media entities and football fans nationwide take notice of the historic accomplishments of the football team.
“We’re very appreciative of all the awards and accolades we’ve received,” said Frazier. “I feel extremely blessed to be apart of the turnaround of PVAMU’s football program.”

Clark Atlanta University President Announces Retirement
Atlanta, Georgia (February 15, 2008) – At the winter Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Walter D. Broadnax, president of Clark Atlanta University, announced his retirement effective July 31, 2008.
Beginning immediately, Dr. Broadnax and Dr. Carlton E. Brown will work together to effectuate a smooth transition, and on August 1, 2008, Dr. Brown will become Interim
President.
“Dr. Broadnax came to CAU at a critical time in our history when we had grave financial challenges,” said Juanita P. Baranco, Chair of the CAU Board of Trustees. “We congratulate President Broadnax for his many accomplishments and thank him for his faithful service to Clark Atlanta.”
NCAT College of Engineering to Host National Conference

The College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host the first-ever Bridges to Engineering Research Conference- 2020, March 12-14, on the campus.Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Bridges will bring together over 150 engineering deans and faculty from universities across the country, including but not limited to, the University of Southern California, University of Virginia, UNC-Charlotte and Duke University. The conference will focus on stating the research challenges in engineering for the next two decades and highlighting opportunities for collaboration and partnerships among these diverse universities in areas of emerging engineering research.
Arkansas Baptist College Launches Male Leadership Institute

Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock is working to end what it calls the black male crisis. Police reports show 80% of the 149 people killed in Little Rock over the past two years were african-americans. Ninety percent of hose arrested were black and 90% of arrests involved black-on-black crime.
The college is launching a male leadership institute. Kids in the community will be mentored, with an emphasis on academics. Arkansas Baptist President Dr. Fitz Hill says the college’s goal is to transform the community through education.
