Congressman Elijah Cummings to attend Tom Joyner Kick-Off Fundraiser on Coppin State Campus

Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and several top city officials will participate in a festive round of activities as Coppin State University and the Tom Joyner Foundation launch a major fund-raising campaign on campus Feb. 21, 2008, at 9 a.m.

The kick-off program, which will be held in The Coppin Center, officially launches a $300,000, campaign that focuses on the Tom Joyner Foundation’s selection of Coppin as its “School of the Month (TJFSOTM) For July 2008.”

City officials scheduled to speak during kick-off festivities include Deputy Mayor Salima Siler Marriott and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Special guests will include Baltimore City State’s Attorney Patricia Jessamy and Seventh District Baltimore City Councilwoman Belinda Conaway.

Atlanta, Georgia (February 15, 2008) – At the winter Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Walter D. Broadnax, president of Clark Atlanta University, announced his retirement effective July 31, 2008.

Beginning immediately, Dr. Broadnax and Dr. Carlton E. Brown will work together to effectuate a smooth transition, and on August 1, 2008, Dr. Brown will become Interim
President.

“Dr. Broadnax came to CAU at a critical time in our history when we had grave financial challenges,” said Juanita P. Baranco, Chair of the CAU Board of Trustees. “We congratulate President Broadnax for his many accomplishments and thank him for his faithful service to Clark Atlanta.”

Judge Glenda Hatchett to Speak at Philandar Smith Bless The Mic Lecture Series

On Monday, February 4 at 7 p.m., Judge Glenda Hatchett will speak in the M.L. Harris Auditorium. Known in legal circles for her innovative courtroom style, and widely respected by viewers for her revolutionary interventions on her TV program, The Judge Hatchett Show, her extensive work with youth has established her as a leader in the justice system nationwide. In 1990, she helped found the Truancy Intervention Project, which enlists the help of legal volunteers to provide early, positive intervention with children reported as truants. She also serves as national spokesperson for CASA or Court Appointed Special Advocates. Additionally, the mother of two boys is the author of Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say, released in 2003.

Bless The Mic, a contemporary spin on the traditional college lecture series, provides a broad mix of speakers who possess the ability to communicate with the hip-hop generation (broadly defined as Black youth culture including college students and young professionals, but today includes a more diverse group of young people), or who have studied areas that are of importance to this demographic.

Michelle Obama to Speak at Delaware State

Elementary School Named about Virginia Union Alum

The Prince William County School Board has named its newest elementary school in honor of Fannie W. Fitzgerald, a 1953 graduate of Virginia Union University. Ms. Fitzgerald was a pioneer in the desegregation of Prince William County Public Schools and a lifelong community leader in Prince William County, Virginia.

Ms. Fitzgerald served as the first African American woman to be appointed elementary supervisor for the newly integrated schools of Prince William County from 1968 through 1971. She left that post to become a learning disability teacher at Dale City Elementary. In 1988, Ms. Fitzgerald retired, but she continued to volunteer in county elementary schools until 1995.
