Voorhees joins the largest teach-in model on global warming solutions in U.S. history

Focus the Nation has created a teach-in model centered on the three most essential pillars for today’s youth to embrace solutions to global warming: education, civic engagement and leadership.

St. Philip’s College Receives Six-Figure Grant From Port San Antonio

port_grant.jpgSan Antonio’s aerospace industry got a great liftoff. This week, St. Philip’s College received a grant worth $139,000 from Port San Antonio, the aerospace and industrial complex located at the former Kelly Air Force Base.

The grant awarded to St. Philip’s will be used to train employees for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of airplanes. This grant targets employees who primarily work for Chromalloy, Lockheed Martin and Standard Aero.

For nearly twenty years, the aircraft technology program at St. Philip’s College’s Southwest Campus has been a pipeline for skilled labor in San Antonio’s aerospace industry. Many of St. Philip’s graduates are now employed by various companies in the aerospace community.

Elementary School Named about Virginia Union Alum

The Prince William County School Board has named its newest elementary school in honor of Fannie W. Fitzgerald, a 1953 graduate of Virginia Union University. Ms. Fitzgerald was a pioneer in the desegregation of Prince William County Public Schools and a lifelong community leader in Prince William County, Virginia.

Ms. Fitzgerald served as the first African American woman to be appointed elementary supervisor for the newly integrated schools of Prince William County from 1968 through 1971. She left that post to become a learning disability teacher at Dale City Elementary. In 1988, Ms. Fitzgerald retired, but she continued to volunteer in county elementary schools until 1995.

edwardmorgan2.jpgSt. Philip’s College threw an unforgettable homecoming party for ballet luminary Edward Morgan Jan 17. The New York-based San Antonio native swept people at the college off their feet when he received them at the Morgan Gallery that is named after his stepmother, Kathryn Morgan.

The celebration was enhanced with exclusive dance instruction for St. Philip’s College students under the eye of the special guest. The events were possible because Morgan was returning to his hometown for the first time as co-director of his company—MorganScott Ballet.

Alcorn Receives a Check for $15,000 from AT&T for Preparation for Study Abroad Program

dr-lee_att.JPGAlcorn State University School of Graduate Studies received a check for $15,000 from AT&T on January 16, 2008. It will be used to help fund honor students’ preparation for study abroad. A representative of AT&T presented a check to Dr. Donzell Lee, Interim Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, who submitted the proposal on behalf of Alcorn State University.The project description reads:

“During the 2007-2008 academic year, Alcorn State University will place special emphasis on enhancing its co-curricular offering in global studies and study abroad activities for students. The obvious interconnections of our world mandates that students in all disciplines are prepared to meet the challenges of global understanding. To this end, the university has established a Center for Undergraduate Experiential Learning. Under the auspice of this center, the Honors Curriculum Program will offer an intensive Summer Language Institute to prepare students for study/travel abroad experiences. The institute will provide an eight-week intensive immersion in the study of three languages- Spanish, Chinese, and Russian.”

Wilberforce Professor in Dayton Opera Production of Macbeth

tgraves.jpgTifton Graves, Wilberforce University Professor of Voice, will be performing in Dayton Opera’s premiere of Guiseppe Verdi’s Macbeth. As a member of the lush chorus, Professor Graves will be ringing out as a tenor in the finales of acts I and II, the assassin’s chorus, the refugee chorus, and the victory chorus.

In comments related to his performance in the production, Graves noted, “This is a fantastic experience and it will open more doors for Wilberforce University to be connected with the Dayton arts community. I am pleased to be a part of this renowned cast of musicians and I am highly impressed with The Opera Company’s premiere of Macbeth.” Graves added, “With the story of Shakespeare, the music of Verdi, and a great cast, this will be an event that no one will want to miss!”
