The celebration was enhanced with exclusive dance instruction for St. Philip’s College students under the eye of the special guest. The events were possible because Morgan was returning to his hometown for the first time as co-director of his company—MorganScott Ballet.

Alcorn Receives a Check for $15,000 from AT&T for Preparation for Study Abroad Program

dr-lee_att.JPGAlcorn State University School of Graduate Studies received a check for $15,000 from AT&T on January 16, 2008. It will be used to help fund honor students’ preparation for study abroad. A representative of AT&T presented a check to Dr. Donzell Lee, Interim Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, who submitted the proposal on behalf of Alcorn State University.The project description reads:

“During the 2007-2008 academic year, Alcorn State University will place special emphasis on enhancing its co-curricular offering in global studies and study abroad activities for students. The obvious interconnections of our world mandates that students in all disciplines are prepared to meet the challenges of global understanding. To this end, the university has established a Center for Undergraduate Experiential Learning. Under the auspice of this center, the Honors Curriculum Program will offer an intensive Summer Language Institute to prepare students for study/travel abroad experiences. The institute will provide an eight-week intensive immersion in the study of three languages- Spanish, Chinese, and Russian.”

Wilberforce Professor in Dayton Opera Production of Macbeth

tgraves.jpgTifton Graves, Wilberforce University Professor of Voice, will be performing in Dayton Opera’s premiere of Guiseppe Verdi’s Macbeth. As a member of the lush chorus, Professor Graves will be ringing out as a tenor in the finales of acts I and II, the assassin’s chorus, the refugee chorus, and the victory chorus.

In comments related to his performance in the production, Graves noted, “This is a fantastic experience and it will open more doors for Wilberforce University to be connected with the Dayton arts community. I am pleased to be a part of this renowned cast of musicians and I am highly impressed with The Opera Company’s premiere of Macbeth.” Graves added, “With the story of Shakespeare, the music of Verdi, and a great cast, this will be an event that no one will want to miss!”

Jackson State holds memorial for Latasha Norman

Jackson State University will hold a memorial service for Latasha Danielle Norman at noon Monday, Dec. 3 in the Rose Embly McCoy Auditorium on the main campus.

The remains of the 20-year-old junior accounting major from Greenville were found at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 in a wooded area on Brown Street near County Line Road in Jackson. Authorities have charged Stanley Dwayne Cole, 24, with murder. Cole, a sophomore criminal justice major at Jackson State, is also from Greenville.

“I want to extend my deepest and most profound sympathy to the Norman/Bolden family, Latasha’s friends and others who loved her,” said President Ronald Mason Jr. “There are simply no words that can take away the anguish felt in the face of such a heinous and senseless act.”

The search for missing Jackson State University student Latasha Norman generated national media attention on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Latasha, a 20-year-old junior accounting major from Greenville, Miss., was last seen Tuesday, Nov. 13 after leaving a marketing class about 2:20 p.m.

Her family reported her missing between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14. Jackson State’s Department of Public Safety notified the Jackson Police Department’s Missing Person’s Bureau about 30 minutes later.

MSNBC, “America’s Most Wanted” and American Urban Radio Networks interviewed Rebecca Coleman, chief of the Jackson State Department of Public Safety, via telephone Wednesday. Hinds County Sheriff-Jackson Police Chief Malcolm McMillin also was interviewed on MSNBC.

Latasha’s parents, Danny and Patricia Bolden, extend a passionate plea seeking information about their daughter’s whereabouts.

Nov. 20, 2007 One week after Jackson State University honor student Latasha Norman was reported missing, investigators stood with her family on the steps of the Administration Tower on campus and pleaded for help in locating her.

The junior accounting major from Greenville was last seen about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 leaving her 1 p.m. marketing class in the College of Business building. The 20-year-old with a -described as very focused and easy-going with a humble spirit - has not been seen or heard from since.

“Tasha, if you can hear us, we want to let you know that we love you and that we’re not going to stop until we know something. We’re going to be relentless; we’ll never give up,” her father, Danny Bolden, said during a press conference on campus Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Since that time, our office has joined with the Jackson Police Department and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department to investigate her disappearance.

We want to remind everyone that because this is an ongoing investigation, we are limited in what we can discuss. However, we can share that we have received several phone calls offering information that we are investigating, and that we have searched several areas, including the campus.
