PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M University’s Marching Storm Band and Black Foxes dance troupe have been selected to perform in the 2009 Rose Parade.

Prairie View A&M University’s Marching Storm Band and Black Foxes dance troupe will make its first appearance in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.  The Tournament of Roses Association 2009 Rose Parade is the world’s largest festival and parade of flowers, music and sports.  The Marching Storm Band and Black Foxes dance troupe will serve as the lead band during the 2009 Rose Parade.

The official announcement was held during a press conference on the PVAMU campus Aug. 29, where Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association President Ronald “Corky” H. Conzonire presented PVAMU President George C. Wright and Marching Storm Band Director George Edwards, with an official Tournament of Roses Association Rose Parade Flag in honor of the special invitation.

Cheyney University student places first in National Science Foundation (NSF) HBCU-UP poster competition

Oct 28, 2008 – CU Student, Walter Lewis, placed first at the NSF HBCU-UP Research Conference. The project is the result of his research conducted at the Brookhaven National Laboratory during his internships in the summers of 2006 and 2007.
Under the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) hosted the 2008 HBCU-UP National Research Conference last week in Atlanta, Georgia.  According to the AAAS, the conference features undergraduate student research and institutional strategies to enhance the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research at HBCUs. The HBCU-UP program champions for the important role that HBCUs have in increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities that are well prepared for participation and leadership at every level of education and research in STEM.

Central State University convocation to feature Step Afrika

Renowned dance troupe Step Afrika will perform Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Paul Robeson Cultural and performing Arts Center as a part of the Central State University 2008-2009 Convocation Series.  The CSU 2008-2009 Convocation Series is free and open to the public.

Step Afrika is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in December 1994, the company is critically-acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition’s use as an educational tool for young people worldwide. Food Network’s Chef Jeff schedules visit to Fayetteville State University

A reformed drug dealer turned chef is coming to Fayetteville State University (FSU). Chef Jeff Henderson, who can be seen on the Food Network, will appear December 4 at 6 p.m. in J.W. Seabrook Auditorium on the FSU campus. His appearance is sponsored by Smithfield Foods. The event is free and open to the public.
Henderson grew up on the tough streets of South Central Los Angeles and San Diego in California. At age 19, he was running a $35,000-a-week cocaine operation. Five years later, he was arrested and sent to prison where he spent the next 10 years. While incarcerated, Henderson discovered a passion for cooking and the drive to turn his life around. He became the executive chef at Café Bellagio in Las Vegas, wrote a best-selling book, and now his focus is on helping others.
In his Food Network show, “Chef Jeff Project,” he takes six at-risk young adults and commits to turning their lives around by putting them to work in his catering company, Posh Urban Cuisine. He arms them with the knowledge, the skills and, ultimately, the opportunity for a new life with a culinary career.

HSSU Professor of Sociology receives 2009 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award

The Emerson Excellence Committee selected HSSU Professor of Sociology Dr. John Burke as a 2009 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awardee.

Three JSU Greats Named to the ESPNU All-Time HBCU Football Team

Jackson State’s Robert Brazile, Walter Payton, Jackie Slater, and 11 other players and one coach highlight the all-time HBCU football team, as compiled by ESPNU. The Southwestern Athletic Conference totaled nine players on the list.

T: Jackie Slater, Jackson State (1972-76) Slater was one of the best offensive linemen to ever play in the SWAC. He was a three-time all-conference selection. RB: Walter Payton, Jackson State (1971-75) Payton rushed for 3,563 yards in four years at Jackson State. It was in college that Payton picked up his nickname “Sweetness” because of the smooth way he ran. He had a great career with the Chicago Bears. The Hall of Famer is one of the NFL’s all-time leading rushers. LB: Robert Brazile, Jackson State (1971-75) Brazile was best known for his pass-rushing ability from the linebacker position. He was a real playmaking linebacker who could go sideline to sideline and is one of the greatest players to ever come out of Jackson State.

UMES sponsors Tri-County College Fair for area juniors and seniors

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s seventh annual Tri-County College Fair will be held on Friday, November 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Recruiters from over 132 colleges, universities and the Armed Services are scheduled to attend. High schools in the Tri-County area as well as Baltimore and New York will be sending 1,500 students to the event. Junior and senior high school students, their parents and counselors can browse the many tables to discuss educational opportunities with participating institutions.

A few of the institutions attending to date include, but are not limited to, Harvard University, New York Institute of Technology, Penn State University, East Carolina University, Florida Southern College, High Point University, Ithaca College, Kent State University, Norfolk State University, Saint John’s University, Shippensburg University and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.  UMES and the University System of Maryland schools will also be represented.

“We anticipate the annual college fair to continue to be highly successful, as in the past,” said Tyrone Young, director of admissions and recruitment.  “The Tri-County College Fair is one of the largest on the Lower Shore.”

Southern University Concert Choir to hold Reunion/Alumni Concert

The Southern University Concert Choir will hold a Reunion/Alumni Concert on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. in Southern’s DeBose Recital Hall.

All Southern University alumni who have performed in Southern’s Concert Choir or the University Choir are invited to participate.

The program will feature performances by the 2008-2009 Concert Choir and solos by performing artists who were members of the choir.  The gala event will conclude with the combined voices of the Alumni Choir and the current Southern University Concert Choir.

Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students.  Children 12 and under will be admitted at no charge.

FAMU to host a round table discussion and Go Healthy Tallahassee Expo in recognition of World Diabetes Day

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In recognition of World Diabetes Day, Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in partnership with Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals will host a round table discussion on diabetes, obesity and stroke and a Go Healthy Tallahassee health expo.
The round table discussion is scheduled for Friday, November 14, at 6 p.m. at the Leon County Health Department at 872 West Orange Avenue.
The purpose of the round table discussion is to facilitate thoughtful dialogue among University faculty and community healthcare providers about relevant advances being made in the effort of reducing the burden of diabetes as well as challenges experienced.

Grambling University’s College of Education to present 3rd Annual Research Symposium

GRAMBLING -Dr. Lisa Delpit, renowned scholar and executive director of the Center for Urban Education and Innovation at Florida International University, will be the keynote speaker at the College of Education’s 3rd Annual Research Symposium March 26-27, 2009 at the Favrot Student Union. Delpit is the author of several books, including her latest, “The Skin that We Speak: Thoughts on Language and Culture in the Classroom,” which was published this year.
This year’s symposium will address ways in which professionals from various disciplines, particularly education, inform best practices in rural P-12 schools. It will also explore collaboration between educators and human-service practitioners to assist in the holistic development of the rural P-12 learner. The deadline to submit proposals is Nov. 17, and letters of notification will be mailed after the review process is completed on Nov. 21. The abstracts of selected proposals will be reprinted and published in the College of Education 3rd Annual Research Symposium Schedule.
